Profile for the Community Board Member vacancy

Will you help shape the next phase of our community?

The Foundation for Natural Leadership (FNL) is looking for a new board member who is passionate about supporting our community of more than 3,000 Members for Life.

Our leadership programmes in nature do not end when you return from the wilderness. For many participants, that is when the real challenge begins: finding a place in their lives and leadership for the insights gained in nature. That is why we are building a vibrant community in which Members for Life continue to meet, learn from one another and inspire each other.

As Community Board Member, you will shape this community together with the Community Committee. The Community Committee consists of an enthusiastic group of volunteers who are committed to FNL. Together, you will create, develop and organise inspiring gatherings and activities centred around meeting one another, connection and personal development.

Because you have experienced an FNL trail yourself, you understand first-hand the power of nature and the value of our community. You are part of this community and know what brings people together.

Our mission

FNL contributes to a world in which leadership serves people, nature and future generations.

We believe that nature is a powerful mirror. It helps people pause, see things differently and reconnect with themselves, with one another and with the bigger picture.

Be the leader U are by Nature.

Your role

As Community Board Member, you are the connecting link between the Board, the organisation and the Community Committee.

Together with this committee, you will help shape FNL’s community strategy. You create space for ideas, bring people together and help initiatives grow into inspiring activities and events.

You inspire the volunteers, bring structure where needed and help turn ideas into meaningful activities. You know how to mobilise the energy, talents and creativity of volunteers, helping the community continue to grow.

You ensure that Members for Life continue to feel connected to FNL and to one another. You also play an important role in preparing and organising the activities surrounding the Foundation’s 25th anniversary.

Who are you? You

  • feel connected to FNL’s mission and values;
  • have participated in an FNL trail yourself and are therefore part of our community. This is an important requirement for this board position;
  • enjoy working with an enthusiastic group of volunteers to develop ideas and turn them into inspiring events and activities;
  • know how to motivate volunteers, give them space and empower them to contribute at their best;
  • get energy from co-creation and from building a community in which people feel welcome, connected and engaged;
  • can think strategically and are not afraid to take initiative;
  • are a natural connector who can easily engage with Members for Life, volunteers, the Managing Director, staff, the Board and the Supervisory Board;
  • have governance experience or the qualities needed to provide direction at board level;
  • bring a relevant network and see it as a natural part of the role to actively represent FNL and its mission;
  • have sufficient time and flexibility to fulfil this role with care and commitment.

What do you bring to the role?

You are curious about people and know how to create connection. You communicate clearly and inspiringly, listen well and have a good sense of what matters within a community.

You understand how to motivate volunteers and Members for Life and how to create space for their ideas and initiatives. You know when to facilitate, when to provide direction and when to step back so that others can grow.

You get energy from creating meaningful offline and online connections together. You understand that a vibrant community grows when people feel seen, take responsibility and inspire one another.

At the same time, you keep an overview. You see what the community needs, translate that into initiatives and help build a community that will continue to inspire in the years ahead.

Appointment

The appointment is for a period of four years, with the possibility of one further four-year term.

This is an unpaid board position. Board members are expected to contribute to the mission and further development of the Foundation for Natural Leadership with commitment and enthusiasm. The time commitment is approximately 3–4 hours per week.
